Hi-Fi & Listening · Westchester & Fairfield County
For the times you sit down and actually listen.
Whole-home audio is music everywhere, in the background. This is the opposite: one room, set up so that sitting down in front of it is worth doing.
What makes a room sound good.
Most of what decides how a system sounds is not the equipment. It is where the speakers sit, how far they are from the wall behind them, whether the two of them are the same distance from where you sit, and what the room does to the sound on its way to you. A modest pair of speakers placed properly will beat an expensive pair placed badly, every time, and we would rather spend your budget in the order that actually changes what you hear.
The rooms in these houses are rarely built for this. They are long, or they open into a kitchen, or one wall is glass onto the garden. That is fine. It means we work with what the room is instead of pretending it is a studio: a little absorption at the first reflection points, a rug where the floor is hard, furniture placed so the listening position is not against a back wall. None of it needs to look like acoustic treatment, and on most jobs it does not.
Power matters more than people expect and is the least interesting thing to spend on, which is why it usually gets skipped. A dedicated circuit and clean power will do more for a system than the next step up in cables. We will tell you where that line sits for your setup rather than selling past it.
The part that decides whether you use it is the interface. A hi-fi you have to think about is a hi-fi that gets used twice. Your library and the streaming services should appear in one place, at full quality, on the same app that runs the rest of the house, and turning it on should be one button rather than a sequence. If there is a turntable, it belongs in that same system rather than beside it.
We will also tell you when you do not need this. If what you actually want is music in the kitchen and on the terrace, that is whole home audio and it costs a great deal less. This page is for the case where somebody in the house sits down on purpose.
Your house
Wondering what hi-fi & listening would look like, and cost, in your house?
Tell us about the room or the whole house and we will come and look. The calculator gives a planning range before you talk to anyone.
What we put in the room
Three makers, chosen because they sound right at sensible money.

KEF
The tweeter sits in the middle of the mid-range driver, so the sound arrives from one point rather than two. It is the reason a KEF pair images the way it does, and why they are forgiving of a room that is not perfect.

Sonus faber
Built in Italy from real wood, and they sound the way they look: warm, unforced, and easy to listen to for a whole evening. The pair most people choose once they have heard them next to something more clinical.

Bowers & Wilkins
The studio-monitor lineage, which means detail and control before warmth. The right pair for someone who wants to hear exactly what is on the recording, and the range runs from sensible to serious.
Common questions
What people ask us about hi-fi & listening.
- Do we need a dedicated room?
- No, and most of our work here is not. A living room can be made to perform if the placement and the seating position are thought about early. A dedicated room removes the compromises, and if you have one to spare it is the better answer, but it is not the entry price.
- How is this different from whole home audio?
- Whole home audio is about coverage: music in every room, at a sensible volume, controlled simply. This is about one room and one seat. Different equipment, different priorities, and a different budget. Plenty of houses want both, and they share the same control system.
- Can the speakers be hidden?
- Partly, and there is an honest trade. In-wall and in-ceiling speakers finish flush and disappear, and they are the right answer where the architecture has to come first. A pair of speakers standing in the room, placed properly, will outperform them. We will show you both and let you decide which matters more in that room.
- What does a system like this cost?
- It spans a very wide range, which is the honest answer. What we can say is the order to spend in: placement and the room first, because it is nearly free, then speakers, then amplification, then everything else. We would rather build something modest that is set up properly than something expensive that is not.
- Can we listen before deciding?
- Yes, and you should. Reading about speakers is close to useless. We will get you in front of the options with your own music rather than a demo track chosen because it flatters them.
- Will it work with the rest of the house?
- Yes. It joins the same control system as the lighting, the shades and the rest of the audio, so it is one app rather than another remote in the drawer. That is usually the difference between a system that gets used and one that does not.
“Westchester AV worked with me from start to finish. Bob and his team have access to the finest equipment at reasonable prices, they are professional, and I am very happy with the end result…so happy that I have recommended them to friends.”
Afterwards
Looked after by the people who installed it.
Our own crew does the work, so the number you call afterwards is the same one you called at the start. Equipment carries its manufacturer's warranty and we handle those claims rather than handing you a phone number. A service plan adds monitoring, next-business-day response and scheduled visits on top.
